Hidden High Country

You have to get out and off the trail.... this is the canyon where Soapstone Creek comes down from the plateau well over 8000 feet up in the high country, first time in at least 15 years I've been there. Four-shot panoramic.

Soapstone Creek

 Way up in the forest.
I've seen over a quarter-century of this creek in my time up there, roaring like a hungry dragon and trickling quietly.....
Going to be there for another summer.
Makes wonderful music to sleep by.....

suburbia, huh?

If you were to suddenly be dropped here with no way of knowing where you were.....
you may well think you were adventuring in the country.
In reality, you are completely surrounded by suburbia along the Jordan River!

Thank you Adrian & Scooby, a fun day!

COLD water

This is what happens to me when I wander around in the woods....
Bitterly cold late-winter day, blue skies and no leaves to hinder exploration. There is a small stock pond above this, you can see the run-off culvert but in the summer the vegetation is so thick that you can't even get to where I took these without a heavy-duty machete. Nothing to show scale but the thing is 10-12 feet tall....

little water

For the little ones, part of the Seven Canyons water play area in Liberty Park....  Did multiple images at different f-stop  settings and fused them before playing around even more with the software. Not bad for no tripod....

bent by software

A cross between dementia & boredom, took these in late winter last year. The editing software & time on my hands did the rest.....
This is something in nature, I'll leave it to the imagination to figure out what it was originally.....

ZOOM(zoom)

The camera has both an optical and a digital zoom, the only safe way to use both at the same time is with the tripod....
Twin Peaks in the Wasatch Range taken from miles & miles & miles away.

junkyard (no dog)

Went on a junkyard parts scavenging run with friends a couple years ago, the place was situated on the site of an old steel plant of some kind and the interior of this thing was eerie and impressive. Only one shot of the inside turned out, no flash as I was trying to catch the ambient atmosphere.

supermoon

Another supermoon coming this weekend. I doubt I will be in a place to take pix this time....
These are from last time, March, 2011 when I had the good fortune to be outdoors at the right time & in a good place.

in the garden....

Used the Macro setting on the camera.
All kinds of small treasures to be found in the garden.....

Don't know flower names but I sure like what they are!

The only exception, strawberries (yum!).

up there....

Up in the high country, Deke's Peak at Soapstone Basin on a cold and snowy April day. Been a few years since I've had the pleasure of being there, was wonderful to revisit....

butterfly

It was a partly cloudy, nearly windless day
 I was visiting friends
This butterfly was hanging from their front porch
Effortlessly, it was doing exactly what it was supposed to.....

How cool is that?

snow stuff

Wind-driven snow can produce some interesting effects.
Then I get to manipulate the images...

Black & white study.... there is a building off-frame to the right that helped whip the snow around and through the fence during the night, this was taken mid-day when the sun finally came out.

tweaks (Part 1)

Both of these started out as photographs of real objects in nature....

Then I got a little creative with the software.

liberty park pan

After the beating this lake took when the pipeline ruptured, things seem to have worked out.

I remember rubber ducky races on this thing 30 some years ago.....
